Despite a creditable 2-2 draw against Milan in their previous clash, Portsmouth’s dismal away form saw the Pompey lose out in the chase for the UEFA Cup. In a group featuring the likes of Milan, Wolfsburg and Braga, Portsmouth’s losses away to Hamburg and Braga proved fatal, as they have slipped down the radar. With a busy EPL winter season coming up, Portsmouth will most likely rest a couple of experienced warhorses for this clash as they look to end their European adventure on a high with a home win against Heerenveen over the midweek round of matches in the UEFA Cup.
Like Portsmouth, Heerenveen have been on the decline in the UEFA Cup and need to radically pick up their form if they are to cut through to the final rounds. The Dutch outfit have already lost against Milan and much of their future chances will depend on the result of the Milan Wolfsburg tie. With UEFA Cup ambitions on the line, the Dutch side will definitely not be at a loss for inspiration as they aim to stun Portsmouth at home.

The season 2008/09 has seen Aston Villa pick up renewed confidence as they have followed up on their sixth placed finish last season and look to enter into the UEFA Champions League qualification rounds with a series of flying performances in the English Premier League. Aston Villa have already qualified for the next round of the UEFA Cup matches despite losing their previous clash 2-1 at home to Slavia Prague at home. With winger Ashley Young in top notch form, Villa look finally have an edge about them and they will be anxious to prove their form against Hamburg this coming Wednesday.
Hamburg on the other hand, have struggled this season owing to the transfer of Rafael Van Der Vaart to Real Madrid and will be fighting for all three points at home. The German outfit are still shocked from the UEFA Champions League exclusion and will be hoping to prove a point or two when they lock horns with English giants Aston Villa at home.

AC Milan come into this fixture on the back of a struggling 2-2 away draw against Portsmouth last time around. Trailing at half time following a scintillating performance by their English counterparts, Milan had to rely on an inspirational performance by the duo of Kaka and Ronaldinho as they keep up their dream of a double of UEFA Cup and Seria A title. As things stand, Milan are six points off the pace at home and following a round of poor results, they will be in desperate need of points when they host Wolfsburg at home this coming Wednesday.
Wolfsburg on the other hand, will be delighted with their performance over Portsmouth at home as a 3-1 victory knocked out their English rivals. However, with Sporting Braga in fine fettle , the German outfit are yet to secure a place for themselves in the round of 32 of the UEFA Cup. Wolfsburg are currently eighth in the German Bundesliga and look at a distinct possibility of missing out on European football next time around. With such high stakes, nothing but a victory would suffice and they will be aiming to do just that when they make the trip to Milan.
